This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the larger structural forces that shape community, community work, and services. The course integrates both traditional academic teaching and community-based engaged learning tools. The course focuses on four main areas: (1) how larger social, cultural, economic, and global forces shape the local community, community work, and services; (2) types of existing local organizations and their community partners; (3) practices and services of local organizations in response to the changing social, cultural, and economic landscapes and the growing needs of the local community; and (4) students' engagement in community-based work through experiential learning projects.
